Dr Shitamoto worked in a group practice and as an associate in Maui before purchasing Dr Leslie Arakaki’s office in 2018.

“I was fortunate to have inherited wonderful patients from Dr Arakaki,” said Shitamoto. “Since then, the practice has grown and we need to develop. Buying a new office will allow me to better serve my patients and continue to provide practical, comfortable and exceptional oral care.

Maui Minoʻaka Dentistry’s new office will be located on Maʻa Street in a Professional Row office building within the Maui Lani Village Center. Shitamoto is the latest of several medical professionals who established their practices as part of the commercial project. There is a need for dental services, and as some of our older dentists have retired or are planning to retire, people are looking for a new dentist.

Dr Shitamoto added that the central location of Maui Lani Village Center provides convenience and easy access not only to his patients in Wailuku and Kahului, but also to those residing in Kīhei, Upcountry and Lahaina.

Funding for the new Maui Minoʻaka office came via a 504 loan from the Small Business Administration, which allows qualified borrowers to secure long-term fixed-rate financing for new facilities, buildings, land or other eligible assets with also little that 10% down payment – what Shitamoto described as “huge”. “We couldn’t have done it without this kind of program,” she said. “It was very helpful.”

Grant Howe, CCIM R (B) of Maui Commercial Properties, said the SBA 504 program has been of benefit to a number of businesses.

“We have seen a number of local business owners realize their dream of purchasing their own office or warehouse with the help of the SBA 504 program,” he said. “It’s really gratifying to see small businesses and family businesses grow and succeed with the support of programs like this.”

“I am originally from Maui,” said Dr. Shitamoto. “It was really important to me to find a career that allowed me to come back to Maui and serve my family, friends and community. It’s exciting to be able to do this with a new office and the latest technology. “

Born and raised in Maui, Dr. Shitamoto received a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Southern California and completed his graduate studies in General Dentistry through NYU Langone Dental Medicine.
