Hyderabad: While most dentists are busy repairing their patients’ teeth, this Orthodontist from Hyderabad has also gained thousands of followers on Instagram by reviewing the city’s restaurants – not in Hindi or English – but in Hyderabadi proper.
Dr Ahmed Ashfaq, whose Instagram account @ dr.foodiehyd has over 25,000 subscribers, shares that not only people in town but across the country love its content.
“I’m a foodie – I think all Hyderabadis are. I like to discover new food stores. I started by posting photos and captioning the reviews on Instagram. Little by little, I started to make videos. One day the app I was using to add music was not working and since I had to download the video I just added a voiceover in which I was reviewing the food in Hyderabadi. Lots of people liked it and I started uploading regular reels with my voiceover. Initially, only the townspeople viewed my content. However, since the coils have a lot more visibility than photos on Instagram, many people from other states also viewed and liked my content, ”says Ahmed, who is also a practicing orthodontist.

Ask the dentist why he chose to do the voiceovers at Hyderabadi, and he jokes, “Most of the content on social media apps is in Hindi and English, I wanted to do something different. For most Hyderabadis, “Dakkhani” is the language they grew up speaking, and so they connect with it. I wanted to explore doing something in this area. Although several people told me that it might not work, I still wanted to try it.
Check out a sample of its Hyderabadi style presentation. In one of his reviews of a hotel on Instagram, Dr Ahmed Ashfaq said: “mirchi ka salan chotey lotey mein diyayin” and looking for a piece of mutton in the dish, adds: “ghost kidhar hai bhai..dikhra hi nahi ”. Locating a song, he said, “ooo..ek boti mili.”
With Butter Chicken Bao, Dr Ashfaq explains in his inimitable Hyderabadi style, “bunon ke beech mein khupas ke diye..sideon se tapakra dekho”. The best is reserved for Roganjosh as he says: “Rogan bolke bachey ko Josh aya dish banana bolke”.
His reels have become so popular that several restaurants have started calling him to review their food too. “After looking at my content, several food stores approached me to review their food as well,” he says.
There are several incredible walking outlets in the city, he points out and adds that he has reviewed quite a few, including Shaadab, Marriott, Park Hyatt, and Dine Hill Restaurant.
But Ahmed is not just a doctor and a food critic. He is also a baker and, together with his brother and mother, runs a bakery, Le Tesoro, in Banjara Hills. “As a family, we love to cook. When the lockdown was first announced in 2020, we had plenty of time to experiment with the proven recipes. That’s when we came up with the idea for a bakery, and we started it only on pre-order. Our customers have recommended us to others and right now we have a lot of orders. We are now working to spread our wings and get a good outlet for the bakery, ”concludes Ahmed.
